Sewing Room Shut Down

In the course of putting together my scrappy hearts quilt another iron bit the dust!  I've only had this iron for five months and already it was building up black deposits on the soleplate and spitting from the steam holes.

My attempts to clean the soleplate were unsuccessful and I wasn't thrilled about dancing around with a leaking problem, given how my last iron died, so I called customer service to request a replacement.  Unfortunately, the process required me to mail in the plug from this iron, so my sewing room will be shut down for a few weeks.

In the meantime, today brings my second year of blogging to a close and I would like to celebrate by sending some fabric and notions to one lucky reader!  There's no picture, because I don't have one yet, but I hope you'll play anyway!

In order to win, please leave a comment telling me what pattern you would use to make a quilt from a fat quarter bundle.  A winner will be drawn one week from today.

  1. I'm sorry about your iron - five months isn't long at all! I'll look forward to your blogging return, hopefully with a completed quilt to show. As for fat quarters, you know me - I wouldn't know what I was making until I was halfway through.

  2. I'm also sorry about the iron mishap. I buy fairly cheap irons because I knock them off the ironing board all the time and then they break. I'm thinking I might making something from Julie Sherman's skip the borders....but then again I'm trying to be a little more creative so maybe I'd make up something of my own.

  3. I had an iron die quickly as well. It was one of those automatic shut-off irons that decided not to turn back on. Ever. I would probably make a chunky race quilt, or a pinwheel. Although I just purchased the Skip the Borders book. Maybe something from there. I'm indecisive. :)

  4. I bought a refurbished rowenta from overstock.com and it has served me well for many years...

  5. Irons ... the bane of a quilter's existence. ha!

Hmmm, what would I make with a fat quarter bundle? A pinwheel or tumbler quilt has been on my list for a while now.

  6. And this is how I know I have too much stuff - one iron dies, there's two more (one traveler, one mini) to use while I wait for the replacement.

Sorry about the trouble. Hope it resolves quickly!

  7. I had a problem with an iron leaking so I started not using water at all. Most of the time I press dry, or I keep a spray bottle in my sewing area and spritz the fabric. Like Lisa above, (such a good name, but I digress) I just buy cheap irons--my current one is a Tfal brand.
With a fat quarter bundle, hmm, I've been thinking about making the Urban Churn Dash pattern by pieceandquilt.com

  8. I'd like to try a simple quit: a disappearing nine patch or maybe a twister. I tend to make big complicated scrap quilts, and I need some instant gratification about now.

  9. Oh no Rachel - that really halts progress to lose your iron. Mine bit the dust this weekend too... but it was older. Amazon is sending me my new hot number... LOL
Congratulations on two years of Blogging!!! A wonderful accomplishment!
It just so happens that I recently purchased a Tim Holtz fat quarter bundle and am using it to make this quilt: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/210543351306362901/
It looks great in the Tula fabrics, but I needed a version for a guy. The pattern uses a lot of the FQ bundle, but you would also need a bit of background fabric. It's a free pattern on the Coats website. I'm going to modify mine so that the graphics on the fabrics aren't broken by seams.
