The Dix Range

On Saturday my husband and I hiked 5 mountains, 16.5 miles, and just over 13 hours.  And today I'm feeling every mile.  But it was an absolutely gorgeous day; warm and sunny with a perfect clarity of view!

It was a very ambitious hike for being the first of the season.  Regardless, I wouldn't have traded it for anything.  And now I have 30 of my 46 High Peaks!

The only downside was that the black flies are alive and thriving.  They are nasty little bugs - 90% mouth, I'm sure of it!

After all that hiking, I did manage to hobble over to my sewing room to trim up my HSTs.  This morning I laid them out around my baby panel to give them a look over.

I'm trying to decide if I want to make another orange for the top and another purple for the bottom so that I don't have transitions that occur in the middle of a colored pair.  But aside from wanting to do a little futzing with the layout, I'm loving how it's coming out!

Gathering Momentum

After some helpful comments last week and a trip to my local fabric store, I came up with a plan to move forward.  I now have two different skies and I will be making two blocks with each color for this 4 block wall-hanging.
The new fabric is in the back

I was able to find this blue at my local quilt shop, which matches the original pretty darn well, if I do say so myself.  I'm not sure I could have gotten any luckier!  Also the color is called "sky", which is perfect.  It's now washed, ironed, and waiting its turn.

In the meantime, I ripped out the two large trees that were now in the wrong color and assembled the smaller trees for my first fabric sets.

I didn't quite make it to sewing it all together yet, but soon!  I've been too busy hiking mountains of late.  Eight mountains and an 8.5 mile run... all in the past three weeks.  But now there needs to be some recovery time, my body is demanding it, and so my sewing room won't be so lonely for a while.

And in true quilter fashion, I have found a mini quilt challenge going on over at Celtic Thistle Stitches that ends on Friday but has caught my attention anyway.  I have a block designed but I don't know if I'll be able to pull it all together in two days.  Wish me luck!

Making Strides

Six new granny squares.
Phew, what a week.  There hasn't been too much time for quilting lately, but I hope that will change soon!

I've continued work on my granny square blanket.  I'm almost to my previously defined evaluation point, only two "blue mint" squares to go, but I've already decided to crochet squares until I reach the end of my skeins.  The current size just seems unusably small.  We'll see where my new path takes me.

On the non-crafting front, I was out of town this weekend making strides on another work in progress: hiking all 46 of the NY high peaks.  This past weekend I got my 14th high peak overall, and my first winter high peak.  It was a gorgeous sunny day, and much much warmer than it could have been.  We couldn't have asked for more.

The view from the top.
